What Is a Venmo QR Code?

A Venmo QR code is a QR code that opens a Venmo profile so the person scanning it can pay that profile. Venmo gives every account one inside the app; a code made from your venmo.com/u/ link does the same job and can be printed at any size and in any colour. Either way the code carries a link to your profile, never your bank details or your password.

Venmo's Own Code and a Code You Make Are Two Different Things

Both open your profile, but they come from different places and suit different jobs:

  • The in-app code - in the Venmo app, open the Me tab, tap the QR button on your profile picture and choose Venmo me. It is drawn in Venmo's style, made to be shown on your phone or shared as an image, and scanned with the Scan button in the payer's Venmo app.
  • A code made from your link - a QR code that stores venmo.com/u/yourname. Any phone camera opens it, it can be black and white or match your stall's colours, and it prints sharp at any size because you export it as SVG.
  • A business profile's code - a Venmo business profile has its own code under Charge, with a print button that saves a high-quality PDF and an option to preset a price. Payments to it are business payments, with the fees and protections that go with them.

Find your link in the Venmo app or on venmo.com under your profile. It is your username after venmo.com/u/, and venmo.com/u/yourname and account.venmo.com/u/yourname both open the same profile. Usernames are 5 to 30 characters, so the link stays short and the printed code stays simple. Because a printed payment code is the kind most often covered by a scam sticker, read how fake QR codes work before the sign goes up somewhere you cannot watch.

Selling Something? Use a Business Profile

Venmo's user agreement says a personal account may not be used for business, commercial or merchant transactions, except payments the payer marks as goods and services. If you sell at a market, run a class or take bookings, a Venmo business profile is the account Venmo intends for it. As of October 2026, Venmo's fees page lists 1.9% + $0.10 per payment to a business profile and 2.99% on goods-and-services payments received by a personal account; payments between friends carry no receiving fee. Purchase Protection covers qualifying payments to business profiles or marked as goods and services, not payments between friends. A code printed from your link reaches whichever kind of profile the link names - the code does not change the rules, the profile does. Check Venmo's current fees page before you print prices around them. Outside the US, or for payers who use PayPal, a PayPal QR code does the same job with a paypal.me link.

Where Venmo QR Codes Are Used

A printed Venmo code works anywhere in the US where people pay each other without a card reader:

Farmers Markets and Craft Fairs

A laminated sign on the table for the customer who has no cash, next to the price list rather than behind the counter.

Tip Jars and Street Performers

A code taped to the jar or the guitar case. Tips are payments between people, which is what a personal profile is for.

Team Dues and Club Fees

A code on the team flyer or the clubhouse noticeboard, so treasurers stop chasing usernames over group chat.

Bake Sales and School Fundraisers

One code on the table and one on the flyer that went home in backpacks. Print the profile name beside both.

Splitting Shared Costs

A code on the fridge of a shared house or on the cabin's welcome sheet, for groceries, utilities and the cleaning fee.

Yard Sales

A code on the cash box. For selling to strangers, ask payers to mark the payment as goods and services, or use a business profile.

How to Create a Venmo QR Code

From your Venmo link to a printed sign in four steps:

Generate QR Code
  1. 1

    Copy Your Venmo Profile Link

In the Venmo app or on venmo.com, find your profile and copy its link. It should read venmo.com/u/ followed by your username.

  2. 2

Paste It Into the URL Field

Choose the URL type in the generator above and paste the link. Leave off anything after the username - the shortest link makes the simplest code.

  3. 3

Style It and Add Your Name

Black on white scans most reliably; a dark brand colour on white works too. Print your Venmo username in text beside the code so payers can compare it with the profile that opens.

  4. 4

    Scan It Before You Print

Scan it with a phone that is signed into a different Venmo account. Check that your profile, photo and username appear, then download SVG or PDF for print.

Which File Format Should You Download?

KoloQR exports your Venmo QR code in three formats. Pick by where it will be seen:

  • PNG for a group chat, an email signature, a team website or an Instagram story, where the code appears at one size.
  • SVG for table signs, banners and stickers - anything a print shop scales up without the edges going soft.
  • PDF for printing at home or sending straight to a copy shop as a sign or a flyer.

A venmo.com/u/ link is around 20 to 45 characters, so the code stays sparse and reads from a distance. On a market table, about 10 cm wide is comfortable for a payer standing a metre away; on a flyer, keep it above 2 cm, and add about 1 cm of width for every 10 cm of extra distance.

Best Practices for Venmo QR Codes

A printed payment code is a target as well as a convenience, so these are as much about the sign as about the pattern:

  • Print Your Username Next to the Code

Venmo tells payers to check the username and profile photo before tapping Pay. Printing @yourname beside the code gives them something to check against.

  • Check Your Sign for Stickers

A fraudulent code stuck over a real one is the standard attack on unattended payment signs. Laminate the sign and look at it each time you set up.

  • Use the Right Kind of Profile

Tips and shared costs suit a personal profile. Selling goods or services regularly belongs on a business profile, under Venmo's own rules.

  • Write the Price, Not Just the Code

A link-based code opens your profile, and the payer types the amount. Put prices on the sign in large type so nobody pays $5 for a $50 item.

  • Keep It Dark on Light

Venmo blue on white scans, but black on white scans in worse light. Save the colour for the frame and the text around the code.

  • Keep the Venmo Mark in Venmo's Colours

The generator puts Venmo's V in the middle of the code in Venmo blue, and the Logo colour in the Colors tab changes it. Venmo's brand guidelines use blue, black for one-colour print and white on dark backgrounds, so stay with those, keep the default size, and don't stretch or redraw the mark.

  • Remake the Code if You Change Your Username

A code made from your link points at that username. After a change, generate a new code and replace every printed copy.

  • Test From Someone Else's Phone

Your own phone may open your profile from memory. Scan with a friend's phone and their Venmo app to see what a customer sees.

Why Your Venmo QR Code Isn't Working

A payment code fails in front of someone holding a phone and waiting, so check these before the sign goes up.

  • The Scan Opens a Page That Says the User Can't Be Found

    Cause
The username in the link is misspelled, or the account's username was changed after the code was made.
    Fix
Open the link in a browser on another phone, correct the username, and regenerate the code from the fixed link.
  • The Scan Opens Venmo's Website Instead of the App

    Cause
The payer does not have the Venmo app, is signed out, or their phone opens links in the browser for this address.
    Fix
Nothing is wrong with the code. A payer with the app can also open Venmo, tap Scan and scan your sign from inside the app.
  • Payers Say the Amount Is Blank

    Cause
A code made from a profile link opens your profile, not a payment with the amount filled in. Venmo does not document a supported way to preset the amount in a link.
    Fix
Print the price beside the code. On a business profile, Venmo's own preset-price code fills in an amount, which the customer can still change.
  • The Payment Went to Someone Else

    Cause
A fraudulent sticker was placed over your code, or the payer chose a similarly named profile.
    Fix
Replace the sign with a laminated one showing your username, and ask payers to check the username and photo before tapping Pay.

Still not sure whether the fault is the file or the print? Drop the exported image into the QR code scanner - if it decodes on a desktop and not on paper, the fault entered after the file.

Questions? Answered

In the Venmo app, open the Me tab, tap the QR button on your profile picture and choose Venmo me. To print a larger or black-and-white version, copy your profile link, venmo.com/u/yourname, and make a QR code from it. Both open the same profile.

Yes. A code made from your venmo.com/u/ link opens in any phone camera, which hands it to the Venmo app or the browser. Venmo's in-app code is scanned with the Scan button in the payer's Venmo app, which can also read a code from a saved photo.

Not reliably. Venmo does not currently document link parameters that fill in an amount, so a link-based code opens your profile and the payer types the amount. Venmo business profiles can make a preset-price code in the app, and the customer can still change that amount, for example to add a tip.

Payments between friends to a personal account have no receiving fee. As of October 2026, Venmo charges 2.99% on goods-and-services payments to a personal account and 1.9% + $0.10 per payment to a business profile. The QR code itself adds nothing; check Venmo's fees page for current rates.

Not for regular selling. Venmo's user agreement says personal accounts may not be used for business transactions, apart from payments marked as goods and services. A business profile gives you a printable code, a preset-price option and Purchase Protection for your customers.

Yes. On this page the generator adds Venmo's V mark to the centre by default, in Venmo blue. You can recolour it in the Colors tab, remove it, or swap in your own logo. Venmo's brand guidelines use the mark in blue, black or white and ask for it not to be stretched or redrawn, and keeping it at the default size leaves more of the code readable.

Cash App is a separate service and does not pay Venmo profiles. PayPal and Venmo are both owned by PayPal and are becoming interoperable, but PayPal does not document scanning a personal Venmo code. Assume payers need the Venmo app or a phone camera.

Venmo is a US service: accounts need to be in the United States with a US bank account, and the account holder must be a US resident. A visitor without a US Venmo account cannot pay through the code, so offer another way to pay at events with international guests.

A code made from your link does not expire, because the link is stored in the pattern itself. It keeps working as long as the account and the username exist. If you change your username, make a new code, because Venmo does not say the old link keeps working.
