A colored QR code is a standard QR code whose pattern, corner markers, background, or frame are set to colors other than black and white. The data doesn't change with the color - a scanner reads the same modules either way. What color changes is whether a camera can still tell the dark modules from the light ones.

The Four Parts You Can Color
A colored QR code isn't one color decision, it's four - and they carry very different amounts of risk. Two of them decide whether the code scans. Two are free.
- The Pattern - the data modules themselves. The scan depends on this color, so it takes the darkest color in your palette rather than the most recognizable one.
- The Corner Markers - the three finder patterns a scanner locates before it decodes anything. They can carry their own color, but a pale one fails in the place a code can't recover from.
- The Background - white or a very light tint. Darkening the background spends the same contrast the pattern needs, and it's the harder of the two to get back.
- The Frame and Label - the ring, border, and “Scan me” text around the code. No scanner reads any of it, which makes this the one place a bright accent color costs nothing.
That split is the whole trick behind colored codes that work. Spend the saturated brand color on the frame, the label, and the panel behind the code, and keep the pattern itself near-black. The result reads as unmistakably yours at a glance while the part a camera has to resolve never left safe ground.
Color Is Not the Same as Contrast
Two colors can look completely different to a person and nearly identical to a camera, because a scanner compares brightness rather than hue. Pure yellow against white computes to a contrast ratio of about 1.07:1 - a person sees a bright yellow code, a camera sees a blank square. Design at 7:1 or better for print and 4:1 for screens, and treat 3:1 as the line a code doesn't ship below. The contrast thresholds and where the margin goes are worth reading once before you choose a palette. Which colors survive depends less on the industry than on the surface. Paper tint, ink behaviour, screen brightness, and scanning distance each take a share of the same contrast budget.

House colors on a menu code make it look like part of the table setting rather than something printed in a hurry. Keep the modules in the darkest color of the palette and let the card around them carry the brand color.

Shop signage is usually printed in a saturated brand color, so the reliable build is a dark code inside a light panel sitting on the colored board. The sign stays on-brand and the code keeps its own contrast.

Badge stock is often one solid brand color. A near-black code printed straight onto a mid-tone card can still work; the same code in the event's accent color on the same card usually won't.

Packaging is where color shifts most between screen and shelf, because the artwork is converted to CMYK and the ink spreads on the substrate. Judge the code color from a printed proof, never from the design file.

Screens are the forgiving case: 4:1 is enough, and nothing spreads. Video is the exception, because compression stores color at lower resolution than brightness, so a code whose edges come from hue rather than lightness smears.

How to Choose Colors for a QR Code
Coloring a code is a series of small decisions in a fixed order: the pattern, then the corners, then the background, then everything around them. The same budget shapes every creative QR code design, where module shapes and frames draw on it too.

Pick the Colors in the Right Order
Nearly every colored code that fails does so because a brand's accent color ended up on the pattern. Working through the parts in this order is what prevents it.
- Start From the Darkest Color You Have - take the pattern color from the deep end of the palette. A navy at #0F172A reaches about 17.9:1 against white; the same brand's amber at #F59E0B reaches 2.2:1, and no other setting buys that back.
- Darken the Code, Don't Lighten the Background - when a brand color isn't dark enough, take it two or three steps darker instead. Backgrounds have to stay near white for the difference to survive paper, and a darker tint of a brand color usually keeps its identity.
- Judge the Corner Markers Separately - a scanner finds the three corners before it reads a single module, so check their color against the background on its own and treat the worse of the two figures as the code's real contrast.
- Keep the Quiet Zone in the Background Color - the empty margin around a code, four modules wide, has to stay the same light color as the background. Running a colored border or artwork into it removes the edge a scanner uses to find the symbol.
- Avoid Photos Behind a Code, but Not Gradients - a scanner sets its light-dark threshold over small neighbourhoods, so a slow gradient behind a code usually survives while a photograph flips which side of the line the modules fall on halfway across.
- Approve It in Grayscale - convert the artwork to grayscale before signing it off. If the code goes flat and grey there, that is close to what the camera receives, and no amount of color correction changes it.
What Color Costs in Print and on Dark Backgrounds
Two color decisions carry consequences a screen never shows: inverting a code, and putting one on paper. Both are worth making deliberately.
- An Inverted Code Is a Bet on the Reader - light modules on a dark background compute to exactly the same contrast ratio as the reverse, and current iPhone and Android cameras read them. Fixed scanners at a till or in a warehouse frequently don't try the image both ways round.
- Print the Code From One Ink - a colored code built from four process inks can misregister at small module sizes, which softens every module edge at once. One spot color, or 100% K, keeps the pattern crisp on press.
- Expect the Printed Code to Run Darker - ink spreads into the light cells beside each module, most of all on kraft, newsprint, and uncoated stock. That works in favour of a dark code and against a light one, which loses the modules that carry it.
- Treat the Paper as the Background Color - kraft, recycled, and tinted stock is not white, and the code doesn't care what the canvas said. Check the pattern color against the substrate you're actually printing on.
- Keep Metallics Off the Data - gold and copper inks and foils look excellent and scan unpredictably, because the specular glare that makes them read as metal lands inside the modules. Put them in the frame and keep the pattern in flat ink.
