What Is a PayPal QR Code?
A PayPal QR code is a QR code that stores a paypal.me address - your personal payment link. Scanning it opens PayPal's payment page for you in the phone's browser or app, where the payer confirms the amount and sends it. The code carries the link, not the money, and it never carries your account credentials.
You Can Print the Amount Into the Link
A PayPal.me address takes optional path segments, and they are the difference between a payment code and a payment code that works at a counter:
- paypal.me/yourname - the plain link. The payer types the amount themselves, which is what a tip jar or a donation box wants.
- paypal.me/yourname/25 - a preset amount in your account's primary currency. The payment page opens with 25 already filled in.
- paypal.me/yourname/25EUR - a preset amount and currency. Worth spelling out for anything printed in a place where visitors pay in something other than your own currency.
A preset amount removes the most common error at a market stall - the payer typing 5 instead of 50, or paying twice because the first attempt looked wrong. Print one code per price rather than one code with a note asking people to enter an amount, and the mistakes stop being yours to chase. Payments are not final in the way cash is either way: the payer can still open a dispute, so a preset amount is a convenience, not a guarantee.
PayPal.me Is Not the Same as PayPal's Seller QR Code
PayPal offers two different printed codes and conflates them in ordinary conversation, which costs sellers real money. A PayPal.me link is a personal payment link: it is a URL, so any QR generator can encode it and any camera can read it, and the payer chooses on the payment page whether they are sending a personal payment or paying for goods and services. PayPal's own QR code for sellers is generated inside the PayPal app on a business account, marks the transaction as goods and services, and is the one that carries seller protection - and its fees and availability differ by country. If you are trading, generate the seller code inside PayPal and use it. If you are collecting from friends, splitting a bill, taking donations or tips, a PayPal.me code printed the way you like is the more flexible of the two. Fees and protections change and vary by market, so check PayPal's current terms for your country rather than trusting any generator's summary of them, including this one.

Which File Format Should You Download?

Print Your Name Beside the Code
The payment page shows who is being paid. Printing the same name next to the code lets a payer check the two match before sending anything.
Watch for Stickers Placed Over Yours
Covering a legitimate payment code with a fraudulent one is the standard attack on parking meters and market signage. Use tamper-evident laminate and check your own signs daily.
Preset the Amount Where There Is One
paypal.me/yourname/25 removes the mistyped total, the double payment, and the argument about which of the two happened.
Fix the Currency for Places Visitors Pass Through
Adding EUR, USD or GBP to the link stops a tourist paying 25 of the wrong unit and asking you to sort it out afterwards.

Scan the printed proof and go as far as the confirmation screen. A code that resolves but shows the wrong name or currency is worse than one that does not scan.
Why Your PayPal QR Code Isn't Working
A payment code fails in front of a customer who is holding a phone and waiting, so these are worth checking before the sign goes up rather than after.
The Scan Opens a Page That Says the Link Isn't Available

- The PayPal.me address was never claimed, was changed, or the feature is not offered in the account's country. PayPal.me availability differs by market.
- Fix
- Confirm the link works in a browser on a phone that is not signed into your PayPal account, and check whether PayPal.me is available where your account is registered.

- The amount segment was mistyped, or the currency is being interpreted as the account's default rather than the one the sign advertises.

The Money Arrived Without Seller Protection

- The payment went through as a personal payment rather than as goods and services. A PayPal.me link leaves that choice on the payment page.
