How Do You Put a QR Code on a Vehicle?

What Size Should a QR Code Be on a Vehicle?
Size it for the kerb, not for the road. Someone scanning a parked van stands two to four metres away, and the ten-to-one rule asks for about 1 cm of code width for every 10 cm of that distance: 20 cm at two metres, 40 cm at four. Below 15 cm, livery codes are decoration.
- The Widths That Hold Up - 20 cm on a car door read from the pavement, 30-40 cm on the side of a van, 50 cm on a box truck or trailer read across a car park. Adding about a quarter to the arithmetic is what absorbs poor light and a reader who stands further back than planned.
- There Is a Maximum as Well as a Minimum - a QR code is comfortably readable from roughly its own width out to about ten times it. A 40 cm code works between 40 cm and 4 m, so one code cannot serve both the car park and someone leaning on the wing.
- Height Off the Ground - put the code between 1 and 1.5 metres up, which on most vans is the upper half of the side panel or the top of the rear doors. Lower sits in the road spray; above 1.8 m nobody can hold a phone level on it.
- Moving Is Not a Scanning Distance - a code on a vehicle in traffic has no scanning distance at all, because the reader is either driving or watching it leave. Livery codes are scanned in car parks, at the kerb and on a stand at a trade show, and that is what the width should be for.
Fleet livery is where the arithmetic gets skipped, because artwork is approved on a screen at A4 and a 40 cm code looks the same there as a 10 cm one. Print the code at full size on paper, tape it to the door, and scan it from the pavement before the wrap is cut. On a food truck the code is read from the queue, which is a metre away rather than four. Print a second, smaller code on the serving hatch for that distance, and keep the large one on the side for the car park.

Fitters, landscapers and detailers sell on evidence. A gallery of finished jobs answers the question a van in a driveway raises, which is whether these people are any good.

Scanned by neighbours watching a job happen and by the customer at the end of it. Sending them to one named platform rather than to a homepage is the difference between a review and an abandoned tab.

How to Make a QR Code for Vehicle Livery
Five steps, in the order a wrap shop needs them. The size comes first, because on a vehicle it decides which panel the code can even go on.

Measure From the Kerb
Stand where a person would stand to scan the parked vehicle, and measure back to the panel. Multiply by 0.1 - three metres becomes 30 cm - and that is the code width the livery needs.

Vinyl, Rivets and Road Film
Vehicle livery is the one print job where the substrate flexes, curves and gets washed at pressure. Most livery codes that fail are the right size and are laid over the wrong part of the bodywork - a shut line, a rivet head or a body crease that distorts the pattern as soon as the vinyl settles.
- One Panel, Whole Code - never let a code cross a door gap, a panel seam or a handle recess. A shut line moves every time the door opens, and the two halves of the symbol stop lining up long before anyone inspects the wrap.
- Rivets and Corrugations - on a Luton box or a riveted trailer, every rivet lifts the vinyl into a small dome that bends the modules over it. Keep the code and its quiet zone inside a rivet-free area, or move the code to the doors.
- Cast Vinyl on Anything Curved - cast film conforms to a curve and stays where it is laid; calendered film shrinks back over months and pulls at the edges, which is what quietly bows a square module out of shape.

Road film is the failure nobody designs for. Everything below about a metre on the side of a van carries a grey film within a week of winter driving, and a QR code under it loses the contrast a scanner needs long before the vehicle looks dirty. Put the code high on the panel, and add a scan to whatever list gets worked through when the vehicle is washed. The pre-print half of that discipline is the print checklist, which is worth running before the wrap is cut rather than after.

Size From the Pavement, Not the Road

Keep the Whole Symbol on One Panel

Stay Above the Road Film

On the upper half of a flat side panel or the rear doors, between 1 and 1.5 metres from the ground, clear of shut lines, handles and rivets. Rear doors are the strongest position on a working vehicle: they face the pavement when the van is parked and stay cleaner than the sides in winter.
A gentle curve is fine; rivets and creases are not. Scanners tolerate a shallow, even bend across the symbol, which is why a code on a car door works. A rivet head domes the vinyl locally and distorts the modules over it, and a body crease folds the pattern. Keep the code and its quiet zone on flat, unbroken metal.
Yes, but keep dark modules on a light background. Print the code inside a white or pale panel on the wrap rather than reversing it out as light modules on a dark body colour: inverted codes decode on some phones and not others, and livery is not the place to find out which. Contrast is what the scanner is actually reading.
They work if they stay flat. A magnetic panel that has bubbled or lifted at a corner curves the code in a way vinyl on metal does not, and the gap under it collects grit that scratches the print. Check the panel is fully seated before relying on it, and re-seat it after a wash.
As long as the vinyl and the destination do, which for a laminated wrap is usually five to seven years of outdoor life. The code itself never expires, because a static pattern carries the link inside it. What fails first is the print - UV fade lowers contrast - and the URL, if it pointed at a campaign instead of a domain you own.
Only if you want per-vehicle attribution, and there is a cheaper way to get it. One code per vehicle means one artwork per vehicle and a wrap shop invoice to match. A single code pointing at a redirect you control, with a different query string per vehicle, gives the same reporting from one design.
