What Is a Reddit QR Code?
A Reddit QR code is a QR code that stores the web address of a subreddit, a user profile, or a single post. Scanning it opens that page in the Reddit app if it is installed, or in a mobile browser if it isn't. The address is encoded in the pattern, so it needs no account and no service behind it.
r/ Is a Community, u/ Is a Person
Reddit has two address shapes and they mean genuinely different things, which is the first thing to get right:
- reddit.com/r/name - a subreddit. A community with its own moderators and rules, which you may or may not run. About 30 characters, so a sparse and forgiving pattern.
- reddit.com/user/name - a profile. One person's posts and comments, and the right destination for a creator rather than a community.
- reddit.com/r/name/comments/abc123/title-slug/ - a single post. It carries a post id and a slugged title and can run past 80 characters, which is roughly triple a subreddit URL and shows in the density.
For anything printed, the subreddit or the profile is what you want. A post URL is both the densest option and the most perishable one - posts get removed by moderators, deleted by their authors, or locked, and a printed code has no way to point somewhere else afterwards.
Check the Community's Rules Before You Print
A subreddit is not a channel you own, and this is the part most guides skip. Almost every large community has rules against self-promotion, and many enforce a ratio - participate nine times for every once you promote - or ban outside marketing outright. A QR code on packaging, a flyer, or a stand that funnels strangers into a subreddit you do not moderate is exactly what those rules exist to stop, and the outcome is usually the post removed, the domain filtered, and occasionally the account banned. The rule of thumb is straightforward: print a code for a community you run, for your own user profile, or for a subreddit whose moderators have agreed to it. If you want Reddit traffic without owning a community, the honest route is to be worth linking to and let members do the linking. There is one more consideration on top: subreddits marked NSFW, quarantined, or restricted show logged-out visitors a gate rather than the content, so a code pointing at one is a dead end for anyone scanning without an account.

Reddit's mobile web pushes visitors toward the app before showing much. Nothing on your side fixes it, but knowing it happens should shape what you promise on the printed page.

“Scan for r/ourgame build help” earns scans that a bare Reddit logo does not, and it filters out the people who would bounce anyway.
Reddit Orange Is Too Light for the Modules
The brand orange doesn't have the contrast to carry a pattern on white. Use it in the artwork around the code and keep the modules dark.
Protect the Quiet Zone
Four modules of clear margin on every side. On a die-cut sticker the artwork tends to crowd right up to the code, which is the first reason it fails.
Size It for the Distance
Roughly a tenth of the reading distance: about 2.5 cm on a sticker or box insert, 20-30 cm on a stand graphic read from 2-3 metres.
Test Logged Out and App-Free
That's the journey most first-time scanners get, and it's the one where Reddit is at its least welcoming. If it's bad enough, link your own page instead and put the Reddit link on it.
Why Your Reddit QR Code Isn't Working
Reddit codes almost always scan. What happens next is where they fail, and these four are the cases.
The Scan Lands on an App Install Prompt

- Reddit's mobile web interstitial. It appears for logged-out visitors on phones and pushes the app before showing the content, which loses a share of every scan.
- Fix
- Nothing on your side removes it. Set expectations on the printed page - or point the code at a page you control that carries the essentials, with the Reddit link on it for people who want the thread.
Logged-Out Visitors See a Warning Instead of the Community
- Cause
- The subreddit is marked NSFW, quarantined, or restricted. Reddit gates all three for signed-out visitors regardless of what the content actually is.
- Fix
- Point at a different destination - your profile, or a page of your own. There is no way to bypass the gate from the code, and the person scanning almost never signs up to get past it.
The Post the Code Opens Has Been Removed
- Cause
- A moderator removed it, the author deleted it, or an automated filter caught it. A post URL is a pointer to something other people control.
- Fix
- Point printed codes at the subreddit or the profile. If a specific post must be reachable, host the content on your own site and link the Reddit thread from there.
The Code Is Too Dense for a Sticker
- Cause
- It encodes a full post URL. With the comments path, the post id, and the slugged title, that runs past 80 characters against a subreddit's 30 - two or three symbol versions higher.
- Fix
- Use the subreddit URL, or trim the post URL back to its /comments/id/ form. Then print from vector so the smaller modules keep hard edges on vinyl.
